Chicas’ defense rests.

The East Hawaii under-13 team claimed the Beaverton Cup on Sunday, securing its second tournament title in Oregon.

“It was a great trip with great outcomes,” coach Skee Saplan said. “The girls worked so hard the past few months to prepare for this trip and completely exceeded my expectations.”

With Chicas playing in their eighth match, it took a Hawaii team, Oahu’s ASC Aces, to finally end their shutout streak. But they recorded two more victories, outscoring their nine opponents by a combined 33-1.

“They jelled as sisters on and off the field,” Saplan said. “We would like to thank all of our parents and our town of Hilo for supporting us throughout.”

Both wins Sunday were sparked by Chicas’ trademarks: defense and possession.

Jordyn Pacheco scored twice on headers and goalkeeper Saydee Bacdad notched another shutout in a 3-0 victory against Portland Futbol Club in the final.

Ayleemomi Amaral also scored and led the team on the mainland with eight goals.

Chicas faced their first deficit early in the semifinals against ASC Aces, but they responded in the second half behind goals by Haley Miyasato, Amaral and Pacheco, winning 3-1.

“After the goal we dominated possession, stringing passes and getting multiple scoring opportunities, but no finish,” Saplan said. “Second half was similar, but our possession and patience prevailed.”

Miyasato and Pacheco each bagged six goals on the trip.

Chicas’ other players were Kalamanamana Harman, Kalena Kekaulua, Kierstyn Yamamoto, Caneel Corpuz, Saige DeMotta, Dashney Murray, Karla Ishii, Nanea Rabang, Kiana Corpuz and Hollie Saplan. Skee Saplan was assisted by Channelle Babagay.
